engagement

At grace church hackney we believe that if Christianity is true then it's true for the whole of life, not just in a narrow, 'spiritual' domain. We're particularly committed to seeing this conviction worked out in our approach to the arts.

We support those in our congregation involved in the creative arts. These include sculptors, writers, architects, actors and musicians. Our congregation is encouraged to engage with the contemporary art scene, in order to give context to our presentation of the gospel to those around us.

lectures

About once a month after the Sunday evening service, we have a lecture - usually given by a church-member. In the last year these have featured presentations on: "the ethos Hollywood filmmaking", "christian perspectives on science", and meditations on the nature of "holiday".

Our 2007/8 programme includes lectures on: "The Bible and the Poor" and “the Canaanite Genocide: Is God a Murderer? These lectures strive to explore public opinion, cultural endeavour and social trends from a christian perspective.

film club

A group meets monthly for a bite to eat and to watch a film, sometimes at the cinema, sometimes in a home. The viewing is followed by friendly bantering critique and non-expert analysis. Everyone welcome...

On occasion we run film club ‘specials’ in an outside venue, where a grace church member screens clips from a film, then presents more structured comment and analysis from the standpoint of ‘grace’. In November 2007, our vicar Andrew Jones will be looking at “Fight Club”.

book club

Each month a group meets over a meal or a drink to swap impressions and opinions on a recent or classic book. All welcome...

other events

Occasionally we stage concerts and screen films at the church or nearby venues, and arrange informal visits to galleries and other cultural events in the city.
